    Hi Guys,

Need some help from you DIYers...

I have quiet a bit of 1"x1" square steel tubing in my garage and was thinking of using this to build the stand for my new tank. My worry is that this steel wont be strong enough to hold the weight of the tank.

The walls of the tubing is 2mm thick. The guys at the company that sells this steel tubing told me that it will be strong enough as it is cold steel moulded... ( or something like that, but to do with cold steel)

Dimensions are 1500Lx1000Wx1000H. Please see the attachment on how the design is so far.

So i need help on determining if this will work or not. Thanks in advance.

you will need to add corner gussets to stop torsion in the stand, i would add another set of legs in the middle to help spread the weight and remove the little legs on the bottom. the more of the stand on the floor the more weight distribution you will get.

take the weight of the tank, divide by number of legs to get a rough gauge of what weight will be on each leg

    Hi Dallas, thanks.

I was also thinking of doing what you stated above, but I also dont want to have to move around the middle leg for my sump. also if its going to be difficult to remove my sump from the side for any reason, i could slip it out or in straight through the front. what else can i do to improve this stand?

You really don't want to balance 1500kg of water (excluding +- 100kg glass) on a 25x25mm square tube frame unless you make add some serious frame improvements.

Like @dallasg said. You will have to add a leg in the middle of the stand (front & back)
or you could add another horizontal tube about 100mm underneath the top one & create a "braced beam".

The problem with saving on frame cost (rigidity), is you have to compensate with thicker glass for the tank which usually adds up to a LOT more cost than investing in a good stiff stand/frame.

You would also have to add extra glass bracing to the tank to prevent unwanted bending of glass panes under weight.

My advice... Exchange the 1"x1" for 50mmx50mm (or larger) & add enough bracing / stiffeners in the frame.

Also check if your floor will be able to handle 375-400 kg per single point where the stand legs will be standing...

I origianlly built my stand out of 25mm tubing and it swayed when i bumped it intentionally. I opted to seek advice from our masa members and got the following design, it may seem like over engineering but it gives me peace of mind.

    Lol, over-engineering is under rated...

Here is the stand that I made for my tank.
    50mm sq 3mm thick.
Weighs a ton but will hold a ton.

That stand looks great. I think I am also going to opt for that. will probably use the 25mm sq tubing for the cross bracing on the stand, and build the outter frame and legs with 50mm sq tubes.
