    Hi All

So i am new to the forum!

I have had fish for years, went from the goldfish bowl
To the tank and then tropical fish for many years

Now I think it's time for marine!

I have read a few articles in the forum and online

    Here are my questions

    1. Should I buy a Marine set up complete set like a boyu?
If so which one do U suggest ( considering finances etc) don't want
Blow the bank but wanna buy reasonsable!

    2. I have been offered a really nice tank only with cabinet etc, for R2000
Should I get that instead and buy all the filters etc Etc

    What do u guys think?
Ps is any tank compatible with marine or is there specifics I need to look for

Hi @Jt143, welcome to the forum.

When I first came into this hobby I purchased a Boyu TL-550. I had it for almost a year and started regretting the purchase due to the size contraints, the crappy skimmer, the round eges of the DT (cleaning the glass was never fun) and the cabinet - this eventually fell apart due to water seepage.

However, it is a complete setup and is probably one of the most cost-effective setups for its size.

Just remember also, the bigger you go the better.

Get quotes on how much it's going to cost you to purchase/diy a sump for that R2000 tank w/cabinet. You'll need a skimmer, return pump, etc. as well as labour to do the plumbing.

    Hope this helps.

What is he dimensions of this tank? Was it previously employed as a marine tank and does it have a sump? You need to budget for all the extras, the display tank is only the first swipe of the card.

BTW there is some great articles on here you should read before starting.Starting With Marines - Marine Aquariums South Africa

I bought a 1.2m tank with cabinet for R2500 Glass sump already included in the cabinet .... I thought the skimmer would be the expensive "extra" part to buy, so I bargained on maybe R6000 - R8000 to get my setup up and running ... needless to say, I'm standing on R10 500 and no fish yet ... (excluding the lighting that's on it's way ..and still needs to be payed).
All I'm saying, is make sure you've got ALL the ins and outs of ALL the equipment you'll need to get your system up and running, and work out the cost according to your budget ...
At this point in time I think my bank account, as well as my wife, would've loved me more if I went with a nano-setup ...
But oh well ...tooooo late now ... :whistling:

start of with a tank that's build for marine to see if you can handle it...
    then go big..

you don't want to buy a tank and upgrade it then after six months you drain it!!

I bought a 102L for test trail in December and now iam converting everything ..

    so enjoy

Boyu 550 is a good tank to start with. U can pick one up at R1500 second hand. I just sold mine for that price.
