    Hi guys

im having some trouble with kh test kits which may be causing problems in tank

I have an old red sea mcp kh tes kit which expires in June 2014, and bought a new red sea mcp kit on Friday which expires in 2015.

old test kit shows kh of 6, new one shows kh of 10?????:eek::eek::eek:

did the tests twice on each kit to double check, and on an old seachem kh kit which is most likely expired, which also shows kh of 6....heres where the confusion comes in

my other readings show the following...ph of 8.2

    calcium of 400

    magnesium is 1400

if my kh was that high I assume I should have had a dip in calcium, which is not the case as I have been testing calcium twice a week for last two weeks

my question is...will expired test kits give low kh readings or is the new test kit wonky.

Did the kits not come with a kh standard?
I know the Salifert kits have a standard that you can test to see if the kit is working. Maybe. Borrow someone's standard and see which kit is out.

My lfs does free water tests. Try your lfs and compare kh readings.

Measure the KH of the standard as you would a water sample. It should read the same as the KH indicated on the bottle (think its 6.8)

I use salifert. Out of all the kits ive tried, i find it to be the best and easiest to use in its price category.
