    Hi Guys,

Recently my skimmer is not producing a lot of bubbles, and producing little skimmate and thus i think i am not removing enough waste from my system. Its a DNW 110, fed directly from my overflow, emptying to my sump.

Initially i thought to replace the impeller, I did this and went from the needle wheel to pinwheel. While doing this I noticed small snail shells blocking the inlet to the skimmer pump, took these out, and was skimming much better.

Now i have basically gone back to what it was before, not much bubbles and not much skimmate being produced.

I have swapped between the needle wheel and pinwheel and notice no difference.

Any ideas what could be the problem?

When last did you clean your skimmer? Maybe there's another blockage...

I haven't physically taken it all apart and cleaned it. Most i have done is syphon it, to get the detritus out the bottom, and clean the skimmer pump (and of course the skimmer cup).

Dunno what else is should be doing to clean it?? The inlet and outlet of the skimmer look clear. But i can give them a clean when i do water change.

Have you cleaned the venturie[air inlet] as this could be blocked?

Sometimes the ventury gets blocked over time and the dirt decreases the hole diameter restricting airflow. Take a small drill bit and turn it in the hole by hand until open. Do it from both sides. Also regularly flush the air tube with RO.

Checked out the venturi, it was clear, decided to stick a tooth pick in there and flush it with lots of water.

Put it all together, still no luck. Here are some pics of what its looking like:

    Nah something wrong here.
First off is the recirculating pump running?
Take off the black diffuser at the top of the air inlet
Can you blow down the air line?

Pump is running, and i can blow down the airline. If i block the pipe, all the bubbles stop.

    problem solved:)

It was the venturi. However it was blocked from the inside i.e. i could push the toothpick in from the outside, but the inlet hole turns, so the toothpick stops. Took off the other end and spotted the salt creep on the other end.

Thanks for the help guys, my fish are gonna love you!

To keep it clear let the airline suck up about 500ml of RO every week.
