    Hi peeps,

I took out my LR today in a last ditch attempt to get it out of my tank, the glass trick doesn't work with this crab =/
The rock is a big solid piece (about 4kgs) and is currently sitting in the kitchen sink covered in RO water. This was done roughly 20 minutes ago however nothing has come out from the rock.

So my questions are: How long should I leave this rock in there? And will this affect the coralline on the rock?

The rock in question is the big one on your right:

I'm sure soaking it in RO might kill off some of the benifical bacteria.
You might get some die off and experience a mini cycle when you place it back in the tank.
So get the crab out now. Any idea what kind of crab it is? perhaps lure him out with some shrimp if other food.

I really didn't want to go this route but all the other methods failed: shrimp in glass, sitting out at night and even resorted to trying to skewer it but it all failed...

It got black and yellow legs with bristles, black pincers but I can't get a good picture of it. It keeps itself tucked inside the holes of the rock.

It is driving me nuts, lol!

i had a teddy bear crab when i started and one night he was out in the open...
i quickly got the glass jar and traped him, otherwise i would have still been trying to catch him

lol! Your luck is definitely better than mine! This one just doesn't venture past the holes in the rock...

Anyhow, couldn't wait any longer and put the rock back in the DT.
Thanks for trying to help! :peroni:

Sounds like a Xanthid crab. I had several and the more holes your LR has the more places it has to hide.

I got most of mine out by taking the live rock out of the water and using a screwdriver to drive them out - didn't kill any of them but gave them away to someone who wanted them.

perhaps you could swap the rock with someone who has predators like eels?

    Thanks all.

I googled pics and it looks/looked really similar to this xanthid that someone else had in their tank:

If it did die, then I feel really bad! :( In any case, I'm going to wait for a potential mini cycle.
    Thanks again for the help!

I just checked on my tank now and guess what?

THAT CRAB IS STILL FREAKING ALIVE!!!!!

lol! I must have the highlander of crabs XD
Anyhow, guilty feeling is now replaced with frustration. Next time I'm definitely buying dead rock.
Will advertise a swop in the trading section tomorrow. Going to go and head a desk now.

lol, yeah, I was thinking the same :p
I'm probably going to break the rock up this weekend to remove the crab (who I now name Duncan), the rock has bryopsis and I don't want to swop it out to someone else incase it cases issues with their tank.

    *has a headache*
