    Hey guys,

I got this single head of purple hammer coral about two/three weeks ago. But it just hasnt opened up properly since. So today I took out the magnifying glass for a closer look and I noticed some white tissue on the one side that was slightly deflated.

Took it out the tank to try and get a proper look - when it was in the tank I noticed the polyp/tentacle that was closest to the white tissue almost "flinched' and deflated, and then re-inflated. So I thought maybe a wierd nudi or something nibbling it.

Tried to pull the white tissue off with tweezers, but its just mush. I see no sign of purple or brown jelly. Do you think it just took a knock during transport? And if so is there any chance of recovery? Note - it is fully retracted in these pics as I've just poked it - normally it is slightly open - just sticking out a few mm, and slightly inflated.

    Thanks for the input all.
    Dane

Apologies, very difficult get a pic of.

I am regretting poking fiddling with it. But I had to find out if there was something bothering it... :( Single polyp LPS really struggle when it comes to tissue recession. Rarrrgh. I liked the colour of this one!!

i think it is just stressed from the transport...i hope.a purple hammer must look so awesome.maybe put it in a low flow area for a day or two and keep an eye on it.i once got a white hammer and was also closed up for a while.i noticed it had some tisue damage aswell.i gave it a iodine dip and put it in a low flow area.2 days later it started to open nicely.let us know how it goes;)

Thanks much for the input Clinton. I hope its just transport damage - its just that its yet to open properly (its been sort of just peeping out, not fully recessed tho), after nearly 3 weeks in the tank. I will monitor and report back. Fingers crossed... I really liked the colour on this little guy....

Lol, no its not dead yet. It looks like that because its completely retracted from me prodding it. Normally it is slightly inflated and open.

What have you done to my coral!!!!

That looks like mechanical damage. Did you perhaps knocok it over recently?

going to disagree with this. Youd be surprised how fast they can recover. So not all hope is lost.
Think move it to a low fow area and keep a very close eye in it.

How long did the guy have this coral? Seems odd that there two dead heads on your frag.

    And stop prodding it!!!

Perhaps move it to an area of less/more light. What corals is it near...bit of chemical warfare perhaps preventing it from opening fully?

Hahaha! Since when are all my corals indebted to you!!! :p

No, there is a possibility I brushed past it with my hand - but not that I recall. :(

It is in a low flow area, I'll keep monitoring it - tho it'll be pissed off for a bit now that I've molested it..

There was a larger colony there of quite a few heads, one or two of the branches had broken off, and there were no new corals in the tanks - so I presume he had them for a short while at least.

not ALL your corals, only the really nice ones :p

Id just watch it closely. Perhpas move it to a different location, maybe its not enjoying one of its neighbours.

Hey Dave, I don't think there are any issues with neighbours - its fairly close to the frogspawn but def not close enough that theres conflict. And besides, I've never seen any form of feeder/stinger from the FS. If its the same after another week then I'll move it.

Its opened up to its usual slightly inflated self now...
Scuse the pics - uber digital zoom on my blackberry

After seeing that pic i dont think you have much to worry about. It look like a tiny head so it wont have the long, frogs egg-like tentecles yet.
The fact that there are two dead heads on your frag means the coral must indued some sort of trauma before you got it.
    Have you fed it anything?

Nope no feeding. My tanks so dirty I figure they can nibble all they want on DOCs and light.

I dropped some flake on its mouth yesterday and it rudely shoved that aside. But my frogspawn has never taken food either.

How's the purple one doing? I also got one a week ago, also only just coming out, a bit more every day.

The coral looks like it will make it. I had one worse than that and it made a full recovery. Add some iodine to the water
