No biological filtration other than the LR? How often are you changing the floss?

Changing the floss once a month is probably not enough and is most likely one of the major causes of your algae issues. Is the floss really dirty when you change it?

I don't run any floss but do have a filter sock on my overflow which I clean at least twice a week.

Ok, change floss every 3-5 days, that will be the cause of ur excess nitrates
Also do 5% water change weekly and change carbon every 30 days,

It's just a sock like filter on the pipe that feeds my sump. This stops any large particles entering my sump, it is basically doing the same mechanical filtration as your filter floss.

You need to be changing/cleaning this kind of filtration media often as the gunk that it traps can cause many problems if left to hang around for too long.

Are you testing your water or a regular basis? What are your parameters looking like?

You definatly need flow in the tank to lift the detritus into the filtration.
