For the price of 1 T8 LED tube, you could get 3 T5's of the equivalent length

Neil, I think its more the long term electricity and bulb replacement saving. A typical LED bulb will outlive a regular bulb by years

Agreed, but do the described tubes hold a candle in terms of lumens and PAR? They don't have lenses and they look more like moonlights.

Tony, are you using these in your tank?

My tank is too deep for those bulbs. I'm looking at the 50W, 5800K floodlight at 80 lumens per Watt for my tank which is equal to a 200 W output and 4000 lumens. I want to experiment with them first as I need three. Jaco Schoeman's dad bought the 6 X 1watt cree bulb pendant and is having good coral growth but the tank isn't that deep

as for the lenses, these are "super bright" type LED's - not your old dull type.
"super bright" LED's are bright because they each have their own tiny reflective dish inside- like a torch but smaller. so they can penetrate water, but how much i dont know.

Old generation 1w LEDs really don't cut the mustard for PAR and tank lighting application. Don't even bother unless the unit is using new 3w etc LEDs.
