We have a 2 meter tank +- 1000 litres all parameters are stable but the nitrate is 50+ and have done everything we can think of to get the nitrate down, we have done BIG water changes, gotten all the filter pads you can think of, denitratefrom seachem, matrix and a skimmer, but without any success.

We were wondering if it may be that the 2 pieces of fake rock and the ship that we have in the tank is the cause of all our trouble?

We have lost 7 fish in the past 2 days and the emperor angle does not look good at the moment.

The only other change that we have made is that I have added what I thought is a good food for the corals (got it at animal kingdom for very cheap) about 6hours before the fish started dying.

Please help we do not know what to do anymore.

Yes we have about 50kg liverock and the tank was completely cycled before we put the fish in, the tank has been running with fish since 24 Dec 2014

Did your nitrate drop at all before you started stocking your tank?

I personally think it's that fake ship - their could be lead in the paint, No idea though. cheap food. Bomb it in the bin also.

Tossed it in the trash yesterday.

I used less than what they said.

We got the food a couple of months ago but I forgot about it and only found it again on Thursday afternoon and tried it out, about 6 hour later the fish started dying.

Do a 50% water change. Your nitrates will then be 25 which isn't deadly.

We did a 100litre change this morning and we will be doing another one tomorrow.
We can only make 100litre salt water at a time:(

Hi Tanya, I am sorry to hear about your losses. Personally, I don't think the nitrate level is the cause of the fish deaths. The following may help identify what caused the deaths:
Can you test for NO2 and what are the readings?
What were the fish symptoms when they died (breathing heavy, spots/marks on body etc)?
How many fish are in the tank and when was the last one added?
Was the coral food expired and was there any food (this or other fish foods) left in the tank?
    Is your tank earthed?
Does it have a chiller running?

Can you test for NO2 [IMG] and what are the readings?
    Yes, the NO2 is 0

What were the fish symptoms when they died (breathing heavy, spots/marks on body etc)?
They were breathing heavy and they were just "floating" in the water streams.
The only fish that has spots from time to time is our regal tang but it is only when she stresses.

How many fish are in the tank and when was the last one added?
We had 18 before they died, the last one was added on the 1st of March (Moorish Idol - he was the first one to die)

Was the coral food expired and was there any food (this or other fish foods) left in the tank?
No it was not expired and I gave it +- an hour after I fed the fish

    Is your tank earthed?
No, I do not know how.

Does it have a chiller running?
    Yes

I just remembered that last Friday our regal angle (he did not eat at all since we got him) died and last Saturday our Flame angle also died.

The regal angle lasted for 6 days.

Sounds like some parasite was introduced in the tank. How are the remaining fish doing?
Was there any chemicals used in the house (did you paint/clean with aerosols near the tank etc) which could have poisoned the water?
Can you set up a qt, you may need to medicate the survivors if there was an infection introduced.

Aquarium Fish: The Regal Angelfish (Pygoplites diacanthus) Advanced Aquarist | Aquarist Magazine and Blog

Never buy a regal angelfish that will not eat. A healthy regal angelfish will usually eat live brine shrimp or frozen mysis shrimp. Also avoid fish that are not swimming normally. Regal angelfish are naturally cautious fish and may hide when you approach, but they should not be hovering near the surface of the aquarium, breathing heavy, twitching or scratching. These are possible signs of parasitic or bacterial infections.

Found some info for you - possibility
