We have had a BTA for 5/6 months and all has been fine. Two weeks ago we introduced two clowns, who immediately took up residence in the nennie. Now the nennie seems to be very unsettled, moving down to the bottom and also to one side (although foot is still attached). I did see the clown nipping at the mouth of the nennie (only once) there was no food there at the time, so I dont know what the clown was doing. Do you think the clowns are aggravating the nennie? What should I do? Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Colbar - can you please elaborate to what your water parameters are in your tank? And under what lighting the nemmie is?

If it is a BTA - does the tips "bulb" normally? Also - do you feed the nemmie? If you do, what and how often?

Can you please post a pic of the nemmie for us - as well as post the actual water parameters (ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, pH, alkalinity, water temp, salinity)?

    Many thanks.

What species are the clownfish? How big are they? How big is the anemone? What color is the anemone? A picture would really tell us more.

It is possible that the anemone was expelling waste, and the clown was eating it, or possibly looking for food. I have seen this behavior before. It usually doesn’t cause problems. However, if the clownfish are too large, and too aggressive with the anemone, they can harm the anemone.

Could you explain to me what “white bait” is and how big this portion is in centimeters?

What is your pH running at night?

Thanks for your quick response. The clown fish are still young and they are False Percula approx 3 1/2 and 4 inches respectively. The anemone is about 15 - 16 inches wide and is green. White bait is also new to me, but I could not find (and non of the fishmongers knew what I was talking about when I asked for "smelt" or "stint" or "silverside. It is a little fish about the size of a sardine or perhaps slightly smaller. I feed about 3/4 inch.
Pics unfortunately will have to wait (I know, it very important) but my husband is the photographer. Will post in a day or so.

I suggest not using the white bait until we can figure out exactly what it is.

Do you have a LFS close to you? Krill or mysis shrimp will also work. Or you can try small portions of raw shrimp that is used for human consumption. Make sure it is raw.

15 to 16 inches? It’s huge! Or did you mean centimeters?

No thought I would be clever and convert, realized during the night I had made an HUGE error (sorry). The clowns are about 45 & 50 mm. I have krill and mysis shrimp but they seem so small. I will try and get some shrimp today.

Sims, test kits are Red Sea, but my husband (who does testing) is a perfectionist. Does testing same time, same place, blah blah blah.
Mandarinman, no the clowns have only just been put into the DT
two weeks ago and whilst they were in QT did not feed them White Bait at all, in fact I only give it to the nennie, but it seems this is a mistake.
I feed the nennie this am with some krill, it seemed to take a very long time to respond, now the mouth is out like the bottom of a ice cream cone (only thing I could think of to describe what is looks like). Hope it's gonna be okay, all was fine until the clowns arrived.

try feeding the clowns first and then feed nennie after they are full otherwise you have a competition that the nennie will lose

that is interesting!? you may need to play distraction game with clowns while feeding nennie or put other option in for clowns?

Pleased to report that the nennie is looking much more normal. How long should I wait before feeding krill again. Perhaps that "White Bait" was not good for it. (Would it have eaten it, if it was bad for it, surely not)

Why don't you post a picture so that Benda can see if all is well?

Lyn, We also had an issue with with one make of whitebait some time ago. Not sure of the Packager. We now use a Brenco product market white bate with origin Bulgaria. We buy from Mediterranean in Jules Str.
One other thing to check, is that the whitebait did not get freezer burn, either in the vendors facility or your own freezer.
