Hi Reefers and Reefesses (Female Reefers LOL)

I got a serious prob, So for the past two weeks it seems that at least one of my mushrooms dies every 3 or 4 days. All my parameters are in check (Haven't tested iodine though) but i started dosing Red Sea reef colours yesterday has Iodine in it.

Maybe my lights are too strong? Running Cree LED's.. DIY unit..
    Lights go on at
    7am - Blue,
    11am - White,
8pm - White Off, Blue stay on,
    10pm - All off
Are my lights maybe running too long?
    Should i dose anything?

    SG: 1.025
    pH: 8.2
    kH: 6
    Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, Phosphate: Undetectable
    Calcium: 400
    Magnesium: 1450
    Temp: 26 Celcius

What type of shrooms are tey? How long have you had your lights? Could be light shock. If NO3 is undetectable this could also be a problem as softies like "dirty" water. Did you add some form of carbon dosing like vodka, orca cubes, bio pellets and the like?

Hi Triton - mushrooms like slightly higher NO3 levels, as they get most of their nutrients from the water. The lighting is not a problem at all. The fact that your nutrient levels as extremely low, might be the cause.

SPS prefers NLP conditions, whereas soft-corals and mushrooms don't.

I have a carbon reactor running with carbon, don't do vodka dosing.. Had the lights longer than the shrooms they hairy mushrooms and red and green mushrooms..
Mmm so how do I get my nutrients up? Also the hairy mushrooms eat pellets that fall on them..

Mmmm, not sure why you having problems, I have two species of hairy mushrooms in my low nutrient system and are doing great. However, I do feed with amino acids, red sea max reef energy A and B.

How are they dying? Are they dying slowly or just falling off the rocks?

Your KH is on the lower end of ok, maybe up that a little.

Did you add any new softies lately? If you have you might have introduced a nudi that feeds on the mushrooms.

How much carbon are you using. How often do you change it. Could be using too much.

Nick, when you say carbon do you mean GAC, or are you talking about a carbon form of dosing, like NP pellets?
I feed red sea max reef energy A and B, must be done together once a day, but can get expensive. I read on another thread that seachem's aquavitro is very good as well. I don't do target feed, just dose the whole tank and switch off my skimmer for an hour.

I have the SeaChem Matrix Carbon running in a reactor. No NP Pellets.
Mmm maybe i should give the reef energy a shot..

How heavily are you feeding your tank? excess food and fish waste is usually enough to keep mushrooms happy.

GAC shouldn't affect your softies, feed them more, just monitor water parameters as well, don't want a excess of NO3 and PO4.
