IT Guys, please help. I have an external hard drive that I do backups to. But I realised that if My existing hard drive packs up, it helps me nothing as I will also loose all the programs.

I want to know how to load Windows, Microsoft as well as the other programs on my PC to the External hard drive. Almost like Cloning the drive to the external drive (Yes, I know you get external drives that does it automatically- but I did not buy that type at the time)

The External Drive I have: Seagate Expansion 500gb.

    Please help.

And please- step by step, as I have limited knowledge (Do not leave steps out cause you know the steps...lol)

We use a product called livestate at work. I think it is a symantec product. Anyhow, you can make an image of your pc and if something goes awry you can restore it.

There is windows backup but I do not trust that as far as I can throw it.

Firstly you would have to buy the software, I don't know of any freeware programs that perform the same function.

This is freeware and should do what you are looking for.

Hey Smithers, thanks for the link. I read thru it, but will wait for a few more answers or suggestions from others.

Anyone else who would like to give their input????

That looks like it should do the job.
I would use norton ghost but it's not free.
I would rather just make sure I have the CD's etc for the software you have and copies of any downloaded stuff like firefox/opera etc. Better to just do a clean install if your drive failed or something.

I prefer to backup documents and if something goes wrong do a good clean and fresh reinstall.

i agree with Smithers, just keep all your docs, music, videos etc. when it comes to a re-install then just have a fresh installation of the programs. You maybe infecting the pc again with an old program that has a virus/corrupt file etc. Rather start fresh and only worry about the data rather than the program installation.
