    Hi

I would like to build an aquarium.I prefer it to be outdoors. The major obstacle,I believe ,is our very cold winters and hot summers.I live in Vereeniging and would appreciate any suggestions.

I am an Airconditioing technician ,with a sound electrical background.

hi and welcome to MASA. Perhaps you could build an enclosure for your tank outside, and also put in clear roofing to allow you to utilise some natural sunlight. Adee, a member here is doing something very similar. perhaps you could read his thread for some inspiration

I stayed in Vereeniging for a couple of months way back in the early nineties. Actually in VanDerBijl, block away from the Fire Station.
That place is cold. Especially the closer you get to the river.

My own tank is "outside". In an enclosed Lapa. The lapa is not windproof, wind and cold air do still come in. And I am struggling to keep my temperature up and stable. Tank is in total about 1100 L and I got 3 * 300W heaters in there. 2 cannot keep it up, must have 3.

And at night I do cover the tank with 2 old army sleeping bags. I knew that one day I would still need them...

So, it can be done, but you will have a big increase in electrical account in the winter.

Welcome!!! You would need loads of heaters for the winter and l a big chiller for the summer, and then the money to pay for the electricity!!:whistling:

You have certainly come the the right place to kick start this amazing hobby the correct way. There is a couple of MASA members that have marine systems outside their homes and i'm sure they will be able to assist!
