    Hi to all.

You got yourselves a newby full of questions and hungry for info, hope you all ready for them..

I just started a 4 ft system with sump 2 days ago, so everything is new to me except for what I've managed to learn from pestering the guys at exotic aquariums, and reading on line.

Good to be here with you fellow reefers...

welcome to masa and the wonderful world of marines:)

tell us a little more about the set up you have at the mo, what equipment are you using, and what do you intend to do with the system in the long term, maybe we can give you some pointers to help you achieve that:)

    welcome and happy posting

    Hello and Welcome.

Please DO NOT buy yourself christmas live stock goodies for your tank, except liverock. And Please do not let family members do it either.

Equiptment, well, that is another story. No problem with a nice skimmer

    Hi Again...

Hey guys, really appreciate the support... wow, it's like I just became single again and everyone wants to introduce me to someone special... hehe...

Here's a little about my tank.....:

    • L 1200 x 450 x 500 main glass tank with drilled 50mm weir flowing to sump.
    • Sump: approx 600 x 450.
    • Hailea HX 6530 Powerhead -1200l/h
    • Aqua 300w heater
    • JVP 201 Vibration pump (twin) wave maker
    • 40kg Crushed coral substrate
    • Bio Balls, ceramics, filter mat in sump
    • Live Rock - Indo about 4kg's (3pcs) so far
    • 1 x 39w T5 Ballast Arcadia)
    • 1 x Aqua blue T5, 1 x Aqua White T5

I'm still deciding on which skimmer to buy, but going on holiday for 2 weeks and will probably only get one on my return. Any advice on what to buy as a sump skimmer?

On a serious note, I made the cardinal mistake of using tap water to start cycling the tank!!!!! Can you guys assist in what to do (apart from telling me to drain the tank and start again with r/o)?

The tank is clear, substrate settled, lighting working - set on timer from 6am to 9pm. Live rock seems to be okay....??????

I have also overdone the salt..... Got a reading of 1.028 on my Tetratec Hydrometer - I did initially buy a glass in-tank hydrometer, but dropped it and broke it... Sent the wife to get another and she came back with the tetratec... any ideas on its accuracy?

I've been told that I dont require all the lighting yet while I cycle the tank. I intend to add another 2 ballasts and 2 x 54w Blue and 2 x 54w White. My intention is to have a full reef, but metal halides are not on the list.... (the wife doesnt want lights hanging from the ceiling, nor the fact that I would have to remove the canopy, and in Fourways where I live, the power goes out regularly......

Can someone advise me on a fail-safe means to avoid the sump overflowing during a power outage? I have connected the flow back pipe to the aquarium from the sump out of the water - ie... its above the water line in the tank to avoid the backward syphon, but its noisy as hell...

Okay, I did warn you guys that I had a million questions, so please help!!!!!????

Welcome to MASA, your tank running for 2 days, do yourself a favor & get rid of the bio balls & ceremics now before the cycle starts, as quoted by Tobes when i was startin out

"They only convert ammonia to nitrites and then to nitrates - this is where it stops, although good at a petshop as they do it well, but in our home aquariums it won't work when you want to keep corals and invertebrates as they are sensitive to high nitrates. A DSB converts nitrates to nitrogen which is harmless. Macro algae like chaetomorpha also "consumes" nitrates.

Seeing that the area is too small for a DSB, rather put some chaeto in there with a energy saver globe on a reverse cycle, meaning that it comes on at night - helps to keep the pH a little bit more stable"

enjoy your stay on MASA, lotsa great info and remember.... WE LOVE PIC'S ;)

    Yikes....
Well, complete your cycle. Eventually you will get the nasties out with water changes. Only other option is to start over with RO.

Syphon break. Small hole above water line. Actually 2 holes in case one day a snail decides to park over the hole when the power goes out.

Or use garden micro irrigation connector to create a small pee-line. No line, and you know its blocked. Use toothpick to clean it.
