You can also freeze a few 2L bottles filled with water and chuck the bottle in the sump, almost like an ice pack. Can bring down tank temp with a few degrees depending on water volume.

Evaporative cooling works well. Tons of threads on this.

Anyway, its too late for most of the other possible solutions. Unless you not working this morning, and can fit whatever in the next 3 hours.

As Riaan said, turn off all lights, and if you have a canopy, leave it oven.

A desk fan blowing into the sump or tank will also help big time!

I had a great idea for a DIY chiller using computer water-cooling radiators which are designed to be cooled by 12cm fans.

Problem is the radiators aren't rust resistant on the inside so building one cheaper than retail stores will probably not save you that much.

Other cooling methods like the fan on sump mentioned already is probably the most effective cheap way of cooling a tank.

Chillers are expensive to buy and to run, especially if you have a large water volume.

    Classic slip.:p

Come and talk to us at Idol about our evaporative coolers.

They are much less expensive than a chiller, and muuuuch cheeper to run.;)

    Thanks Helga.
    But it's not our invention.
Evaporative coolers are available overseas, but they cost a fortune, and we feel that ours may be better.;)

The main thing with these is that they use far less energy than a chiller, so instead of using 1000watts for a tank, you may only need 20-30w.

We have a client who has just installed one we designed on his 2500l tank with halides etc for lighting. He just contacted us to say that his tank had gone up to twenty six degrees now. This is at 3 pm on a day that in PTA is 36degrees C, on a tank that should need a two or three thousand watt chiller.

Happy to report my system only hit a max of 28 degrees running everything on full, except for lighting on the sump. Local temp was 34 degrees.

Looks like I might get away without a cooling system this summer. :D

With the low humidity in Gauteng, I'm surprised that everyone doesn't go the evaporative route
