I have just filled my tank with water and have started the cycle. I have just over a 1000 liters of water between the tank and sump. I have a 300w heater in there right now. Is this a big enough heater for this much water? Thanks

with todays weather I dont think so give us some more info on your setup as dimentons will make a difrence a long shalow tank will lose more heat than a cube also what lighting and pumps will you be runing as these also add heat also is the room where the tank is heated ect all play a part

    Nope, not even close... lol
You need at least 3x 300w heaters if your going for normal heaters or 2x 300w if your using eheim jager heaters (best heaters in my opinion)

I used to use 2x300w heaters in my 130l nano aquarium & on a very cold day, it still struggled to keep up. A couple weeks ago, i replaced one heater with a 250w eheim jager heater, & now its staying much more stable.

One 300w heater will not heat up 1000 litres of water, depending on make you will need at least two, like two 250w E-heim heaters that are rated for 400 - 600 litre tanks.

Haha nothing will get warm in this weather. The tank is 180cm by 75cm high by 60cm wide. I have a combo light, 3 metal halide, 4 led's and 4 T5's. I havent got any powerheads yet but think I'm going to go with the Ecotech vortechs. The room I wouldn't say is the warmest either.

Only going on what the manufacturers suggest, and what is written on the packaging, besides why keep your heater constantly switched on and then run the risk of heater failure.:)

Would recommend al least 3 heaters since you in jozi.
All depends on the region & room temperature where the tank is .

Jozi is snowing now so 1 x 300w on a 1000L not enough unless you place has aircon & heaters

Depends on your room Temperature, as mentioned above. More also on the room size, if it is double volume etc... And if there are open doors, wind coming in. In a closed well insulated area, it could do the job.

Also, note that gas heaters will drop your PH.

I think it 1 watt per 1 liter water ratio, stand to be corrected.

What sort of temperature drop do u guys notice from the sump to the tank? My sump is definitely warmer than the tank, so I was thinking my second 300w should be hiddden in the tank. Or should it too be in the sump? The heater i currently have is a eheim jagger 300w.

1w per 2l is the ratio dependant on outside factors ofcourse. I run 2x 300w jagers on 1200l total volume and i drop 2 degrees in the evening. Getting another this weekend. Also in jhb.
