Has anyone ever seen one of these kept localy I am not sure of which Acanthurus it is but Im leaning towards Acanthurus Bariene or possible even a Fowleri. I am quite keen to add it to my collection once I can get a positive ID. Here is the pic that started it all

that looks like a juvie pencil, they get over 50cm's, probably one of the most commen up here........when it's a lighty the whole tail is white, till the tail grows past it, and it fades onto the body and becomes a white dot sort of where a YT's dot is. That pic does the fish too much credit, they not that nice in the tanks and do change their colours too much.

yeah its a ring tail surgeon. Acanthurus leucocheilus. I believe the Koek-sister had one is his concrete box before he shut that down.

Doesnt look anything like a sohal deadmeat?

Actualy I can find a dozen pics of Bariene that look just the same as that one Mags just that that one was the clearest and biggest. I sure hope its not the local one, not that I wanna prove anyone wrong. Would just awsome if it was another species we have not being exposed to yet

I would agree it seems to be A.Bariene owing to the Yellow edges on its dorsal and ventral fins coupled with the white mouth and black spot behind the eye.Problem in IDing these fish is there are a number of similar fishes namely leucocheilus,Blochi,Dussemeiri,Fowleri to name a few.To further complicate the issue is that these similar species vary in colour and shade depending on where they are found, sex and age making a positive ID almost impossible unless DNA samples are extracted in a lab environment. All of them grow large and are vericious eaters,I had a A.Blochi for many years that was about 50cm.Great peaceful giants that need plenty space.
