Thought I would move my thread to this location (might be a bit more appropiate ;))

My system finally kicked off the cycling phase! :yeahdude:
    Pictures will follow soon :whistling:

I've added some live rock yesterday, and was quite surprised to find two different species of starfish on it! These are VERY small ..
The first one is a baby brittle starfish if I'm not mistaken?

Sorry for the bad quality ...my cellphone is not too good at taking macro shots through the glass
I've got about 4 of these guys ( one of them is totally white ...quite cool) measuring only maybe 2cm from tip to tip...

This is another one I've found (one leg missing though :() I've got NO idea what kind of starfish this might be (measuring around 8mm from tip to tip).....sorry again for the poor quality of the photo:

Are these small guys going to die off during the cycling phase? (I realy hope they make it through)

OK ...some live rock in the DT, Orca bio cubes in the sump ...dosed the system yesterday with some Seachem Stability and some fishfood flakes to kick off the cycle ... 24 hours later ... NO3 = still 0, NO2 = still 0 Ammonia = obviously still 0 .. I wonder if the bio cubes might actually cause the level NOT to spike at all during the cycle?
My Ph is 8.1 but my Alkalinity is only 5 ... It looks like I'll need Washing soda to get my alkalinity level up (baking soda will drop my Ph too much) ... where can I find good washing soda to use? Pick n Pay? ...what brand? ...
Pity I have to take the small Asterina starfish out (allthough I'm not planning to have any SPS's for maybe another year or 2) .... it's already got a name "Stompie" because one leg is missing ... :p

The cycle will take a few days, you will see a spike in nh4 and no2, then no3 will appear and cubes will kick in after.

Get your Alk to 8-9, what salt did you use? In a new tank can't see why your Alk would be so low

Right.....tank cycling for almost 2 weeks now.... no sign of anything bad..
Added a cube of meat to the tank 2 days ago...no sign of any readings yet... ammonia 0, nitrites 0, nitrates 0 ....
    Ph 8.14
    Temp 25C
    Alk 5
Something must be working, cause the meat starts to look...welll...not fresh.... yet the readings are all at 0...
Skimmer is working overtime though ...geeezzz... wonder what all that $#!^^ from the skimmer will look like under a microscope... :)

2nd Week of cycling done.... the piece of meat is still in the tank ... low and behold I've got some readings today..
    Ammonia..0
    Nitrite ..0.05
    Nitrate ..1
Added some stability again today.... will keep the piece of meat in the tank for "ammonia feeding"...
Hopefully the biocubes kick in soon and hopefully the nitrites will be down to 0 again soon....

3rd Week of cycling......meat still in the DT...but looking more like old shredded calamri by now ...
    Ammonia still 0
    Nitrites 0.2
    Nitrates 2
I decided to go the DIY route with LED's ...but that will only happen in a years time....in the mean time, I've got a quad 54W t5 unit
At least I don't have to use a flashlight to take photos now! ! :)

Seeing that the tank is cycling for 3 weeks now, it's surprisingly clean!
Maybe cause there were no lights until a day ago

Week 4 of cycling done ....
    Temp 25C
    Sg 1.025
    PH 8.19
    AMMONIA 0 !
NITRITE 0 ! BOO YEA!! :yeahdude:
    Nitrate 3
    Alk 4 :(

With the Ammonia and Nitrite at 0, me thinks it's time for some LS !! ;)
Will definitely look at something to add to increase the Alk ....

Dont add a damsil. Rather start with 2 clowns and then give it a week before you add more LS.
Dont forget to use special blend.
