Hi guys, hope someone can help with this question.

One of my potential clients asked if the frozen fish I supply is halaal. I checked the boxes but couldnt find a sign. This fish is caught & processed / frozen at sea.

Could someone enlighten me on this please

Frans. Being a Muslim, All fish is Halaal except eels, sharks and skates/rays. I suggest you contact SANHA or ICSA, they will give you a better explanation to all of this.

Thanx Mek  Thats how I was explained by my supplier as well but this is one of those clients who want to see the little sign on the box :p

Will however contact the organisations you mentioned just to double check (also very interesting for my own knowledge, as I find the Muslim religion very interesting....I will however have a problem as I like my braaivleis & :peroni: toooooo much!)

Ok just one more thing. When preparing fish for Muslims, you cannot use the same utensils as you will use for eg. in meat, as not all meat is Halaal.

Thanks for all the info guys...luckily I am not preparing good ol' fish & chips but just re-selling as exactly as I get it from my supplier in CT. I dont even re-pack so I would guess I would be safe to tell my client it is Halaal although not "officially" certified.

BTW why not sharks, rays etc

No not at all man, its just a bit complicated, no disagreements or debates its clear cut As there are 4 different schools of thought in Islam and there are a few differences when it comes to sea life as to what is allowed and what is recommended to stay away from. I am with Mek on the Sharks part as we follow the same school of thought. There is another school of thought that allows any sea life to be consumed but i dont follow that school so i dont know whats the Exact ruling. In that same breath my school of thought allows me something that the other does not allow. hope i am making sense here

Cool thanks thanks a lot, was just a very interesting Q for me . I had more or less the same idea (except i was thinking maybe because they are "pure" predators).

Very interesting though , and glad no one took offence

Cool man, No one can take offense as its clear rulings depending on which school you belong to. Its very interesting for myself as well. Will ask the Moulana when i see him again to try and give a better explanation.

I've been looking into the matter and certain schools of thought allow it and some don't just like prawns
