Hairy Purple Bubble "Algae"?

Hi Hennie, While with Hill last night we saw some "Algae" in his BIL tank.

It has the shape of normal bubble Algae

Is purple.

Has hairs on them (also Purple)

Appear in small, loose clusters. bout 10mm in diameter

when you squeeze it between your finger it "mashes" easily and is soft no hard membranes or so.

We tried to take Pics and hopefully hill will post, but the pics are poor.
Mr Google cant help me either on this one.

Oh and I have no idea if it really is "algae"

Hmmm, interesting one...

I've previously had similar organisms in my tank (with relatively new LR). Soft, bubble-algae size, and pink. When squashed the insides felt slimy.

I could never identify them, but suspected that they were some type of animal, rather than algae - perhaps a species of sea squirts (ascidian).

the guy that sleeps with hills sister thats me....

please can any one make head or tail what that is.
no algae problems in the tank at all ,just lots of these purple things.
also very easy to remove you just suck them up.
but the more you suck them up the faster they grow.

HELP HELP..................

If they are a kind of sea squirt then they will be beneficial to the system, as long as they don't get out of hand, perhaps look at how much you feed to keep the population down.
 
May I suggest you keep your hairy armpits out the tank. :lol:
 
come guys what is it,the base and inside is clear
hill will send a free coral to the guy that can id it?????????????
 
could it be a kind of sponge? It's a long shot but the bad pics look similar to Tethya spp. pic in Reef Aquariums vol. 3 page 592 (small bad pic?)

Meanwhile, considering I had these same pieces/tufts of algae many times over 10-6years ago...strangely NONE in past 4years.

ALSO, first time I saw/felt anything resembling description were in Eastern Cape Reef/FOWLR aquaria , about 15y ago
...all NSW, local rock and specimens from Transkei/Ciskei/Eastern Cape

Here's something to steer you in the right direction

Rhodophyta

Of the order, Gelidiales.
>100 agar producing taxa.

The genera of Red algae which may have the characteristics described .

Almost certainly a delicate, membranous, to leathery, textured genus

Asparagopsis taxiformis ?
A red, slimy, hairy algae.Nuisance.

Botryocladia ?
A red bubble algae

 Polysiphonia ?
A red, hair/turf algae. Nuisance.

Gelidium ?
Similar to last, above ^

but anyway...a better pic will get more targeted ID/reply
