Power was off since 8am yesterday morning till about 4am. Grrrrr.

The last one was on the 17th of November. We had to prepare for my mom's bday party we were throwing on the next day - what a bloody nightmare.

This sort of thing is really making me second guess my notion of getting a tank. I will have to spend thousands on back-up hardware before I can even think of filling my tank up.

What also worries me is that my house gets very cold in winter (high pitched ceilings, no crawlspace underneath the tiles for insulation).

Gimme a pep talk here fellas!

IMO bare minimum you need is a air stone, other than that you can start looking at getting a return pump on a battery.

More that this you dont need, but its always nice to have.

You dont need to spend $$$$ on a backup solution. Only run the essentials eg return pump and maybe a flow pump. That will get you through most power cuts

and its not winter so heating should not be a issue for a while. maintain flow and things would be ok.

Hi RocketRooster. I'm have just started a 250 litre tank and went throught the motions of planning backup power for it.

50W pump (one of your tank pumps)
102 ah deep cycle battery (R1200)
600W inverter with autostart and autocharge (R1880)

This will give you 20hrs plus and will cost you R3000. Not peanuts I know.

    Hope it helps.

Let me know if you need to know where I bought the inverte and battery from.

Thanks man. That 3k puts a 2 month delay (at least) on my fill-up and switch on event :(

    That's what's pissing me off.

I have connected an old computer ups(just replaced the battery) to a return pump and works well. Havent tested to see how long the battery will last, got bored after 3/4 hours. But this is on a small tank. I also keep a battery operated air pump with spare batteries just in case.

What do you guys do to preserve heat in the tank during extended outages?

If you need convincing to start a tank I would rather suggest you save the money and spend it on something else. You will get bored of it after 6 months and then you will lose half of your money, atleast.

My 2c on heating during power outtage...
I have found the absolute easiest & most effective way of heating my tank in winter power outtages...
I bought myself one of those small portable gas camping lanterns at outdoor warehouse for R200. (The ones with replaceable gas cartridges)
I cut out all my closed cell foam underneath my tank to expose the clean glass (only left foam where glass touches frame)
I then hang the lantern about 250mm underneath the glass pane (suspended from tank stand stiffeners) & light the lantern & turn it up to approx 20% capacity. I then completely close the back of my stand with a emergency/space blanket & only leave 2 holes (top & bottom) to allow in fresh air for the lamp.
It works so well, it actually heats up my tank to about 29 degrees if i set it too high for about an hour, even in winter.
For flow i just connect a R100 lead acid battery to my eco-vortech pump...
    Hope someone understands this...
