    Hi please help, tank 4 months old. Checked parametrs Saturday, everything fine. Have wrasse for two months. Suddenly started "sleeping" this afternoon as well. He usually goes to "sleep" at about 6pm and awakes at about 8am. He does this by burrowing under the gravel. He awoke later this afternoon, but is now lying on his side, breathing heavily. Has not eaten today. All other fish 100%
    Any suggestions PLEASE.

    @vinesh, these wrasse are very sensitive and require frequent feedings of live food, even a tank of 1 year is too young for such a species in my opinion..

    has he been eating? and what? have you been supplementing his diet with live brineshrimp? what is the condition of his body.. thin fat?

    i am guessing that he has slowly starved..

    Hi Leslie, Thanks for your input. I think you may be right regarding feeding. Yesterday morning I noticed he was not perky at all. I normally feed all the fish once a day, yesterday I fed thrice. Thereafter he seemed to perk up.
    Feeds consists of frozen super shrimp or mysis. On odd occassion theyd get live brine (every fortnight). He is by no means fat, but always seemed content.
    He did not budge at all with the last feed, I wonder if its not too late.

    Wrasses are very sensitive to low levels of Oxygen and/or high levels of Ammonia and/or nitrate. What are these parameters in your tank. We need exact numbers please.

    If you say the parameters are fine. We exclude water chemistary/filtration as a cause. If you give us the water parameters, you have a better chance of saving the fish because we get a bigger picture of the situation.

    unfortunatley it is a common trait with these types of wrasse (Anampses sp) if incorrect feedings are administered (not blaming just pointing out). often they are bought as first wrasse species introduced and are added before a stable matural food sorce can be established..

    i have caught leaf wrasse species on my trips to the wild coast in the past but actually leave them alone if i see them now owing to thier demanding feeding routine..

    Hi guys, thanks for the responses. Unfortunately as a newcomer, you expect some more information from LFS, but this always not forthcoming. As a result you learn from experience (usually an expensive lesson!!!).
    My parameters for interest sake are as follows:-
    ammonia=0
    nitrite=0
    nitrate=5
    phos=0
    ca=420
    mg=1450
    ph=8.3
    temp=24.5
    kh=9
    O2= ??

    Thanks once again for your input and time, well appreciated.

    everything seems fine, what reading are you measuring im PPM (parts per million) or ppt (parts per thousand)? nitrate seems ok even though it is a touch up more than it shold be...

    Thank you Vinesh. Now we know that the water parameters are acceptable and can rule that out. Do any of the other fish seem to be breathing heavily?

    I had the same wrasse and he didn't last more than a month. Don't beat yourself up about it. That was the only fish I lost in the 8 months I'm in this hobby.. I agree with the guys, feeding them is not easy..
