Hi there guys, I have sponge or soft type green algae growing on some of my rocks and harder type difficult to remove type on the glass. I removed all bio balls and sponge filter from sump and all I have left is a couple of bags of ceramic rings and newly added carbon. The skimmer is running as it should. I know it is probably a stupid question but I am very new to marine, always had freshwater tanks and never had green algae problems.
    Please help:1:

Please post a picture of what you got left in the sump.

Green algae are normally directly related to overfeeding. do you feed any frozen foods and how often. Number of fish?

I have one fox face, two clowns, two yellow tail damsels, one dancing shrimps and one fire shrimp and I feed two pinches of small pellets daily and one block of frozen food a week just before 50L water change. I have a standard 1.2m tank.

Does not sound like you are over feeding.

Sump layout is not working for me. Normally it should be mechanical, biological then chemical.

You got biological before mechanical. So I suspect a lot of trapped detritus in there. Maybe the quickest solution is to use a filter sock on that down pipe.

Also switch off your return pump for 10 minutes when you feed flakes. No point in washing food down to the sump to be trapped before the skimmer. Just remember to switch the return pump back on again. A timer relay or one of the new DC pumps would work.

Would your skimmer fit in the first chamber. If its too deep, you can always use PVC pipes to lift it higher.

Can you give us a bit more detail on your setup, what type of lights and how old are they, how much flow (how many powerheads are in your display) and if you can water parameters? All of these can contribute one way or the other to GHA and are usually the most common.

Hi there, I have a standard 1.2m tank with sump, over enough flow with two power heads and 2x odessy t5's just over a year old, s.g .025 with 50L water change a week, water I get from the two oceans Aqurium and top up water is RO from local p.s
I will try post a pic of the little bit of GHA I have it is the highest rock in the tank.
and o yes I have started the Vodca treatment two days ago and put about 1.2ml per day and Leave the lights on for about 4 hours per day.
    Hope that will help ?

    Thanks Riaan
I will try putting the skimmer in first compartment this weekend, hope it fits and my second chamber what do you suggest I do in the second smaller chamber, must I put the carbon first then rings ? money is a bit of a issue to fill the third chamber with live rock ( what do suggest cost wise for now ) that leaves my 4th chamber free that is the largest chamber of them all.
Thanks for your replies and advise :1:
