Hi all. Have just purchased a Boyu TL55 Nano Tank and stand yesterday. Its looking great in my lounge even though its empty.
We were down in durban for a week holiday and visited the ushaka Marine world and my 2 year old was going crazy over the fishes so after a week of reading on the internet we finally decided to go for it.

Im not sure what im in for but willing to make this happen and enjoy the fun along the way. I have kinda figured that this is going to take some initial waiting before we can get going but certainly has long term gain.

    I have a couple questions:

    1. Is there an approved supplier list for Livestock in Gauteng ?
    2. Which are the bigger aquarium stockists whom have some showroom tanks to view ?

    This site is brilliant !!!

    A VERY WARM WELCOME!!!!!!:wave2:

Hope you know you are in for the ride of your life:yeahdude:
This is by far the best hobby and the best community(MASA) in the World!

I was one of those who had to learn the hard way that you basically sell your life to your LFS (Local Fish Store), so to get the right price and BEST ADVICE is very important!

After searching for the right LFS for about a year I found PETSTOP in pretoria, THEY ARE JUST THE BEST people you will ever meet. ;)

WE WANT TO SEE PICS, even if it is emty!

Welcome to MASA. There are a few pet stores around Jo'burg with decent livestock and corals. VIP Pets in Northgate is one, Idol Marine in Midrand is another and a sponsor. Pet Stop or Dorry Pets in Pretoria have brilliant stuff and are sponsors as well.

The best now would be to post a few pics in a new thread about your set up and ask away. We will point you in the right direction

    Thanks for the comments.

Have been to VIP Pet store in NorthGate this morning. Just read about Idol Marine on another thread, they are 5km away so will definitely be checking them out.

Need to get some decent live rock this week

thats a decent tank you got. its basically got everything you need:) Some pics would be nice:) did you get it brand new?

The first thing you gotta do is look through the tanks setups on here, the internet and real life tanks and set yourself a goal. And decide if you want a fish only tank, fish only with live rock or a full reef with coral.

From there you we can see what all you need concerning light and filtration etc. the standard lighting is good but not for certain corals, thats if you want corals. the filtration is good:)

My opinion, if you have the funds. buy the best you can get. I started a tank about 3 months ago and im upgrading my lighting for the third time and doing major upgrade on the filtration.

Trust me this hobby is addictive:)

Got it second hand. Guy had it running for 4 months and convinced he had to go bigger, so yes it seems addictive...
I am definitely looking at putting fish, live rock and corals...++
So have been reading all the mods that need to happen but not sure will wait for someone here to complete so I can copy the setup. Going to talk to Idol Marine for advice and path forward.

I have obtained the water from Northgate and topped the tank up. Also bought some live rock to get it going. Think i need to get a full test kit to check parameters.

The guy i bought the tank is pretty sharp as he left the sand in there for me with some water to speed up the process. there seems to be some life still there as there is small little snails present...

Not sure if this is good or bad and whether the better option will be to start from scratch. Considering I am new to this and know nothing about keeping fish I assumed

    Hey des,
ZGlad you getting organised- patience is the key- have learnt that by now, and can tell you im by no means smart or an expert- i just read and re read all the info on here.. if you get stuck just ask the wealth of knowledge and the eagerness of guys to help is amazing and (all of them far more knowledgable than I will ever be) .

Be patient...its worth it in the long run

Hello desr, sorry for the belated welcome I missed you when you started out:) great to hear that the tank is up and going and that you have some LR in it, also the advice you get from our sponsors is great and Idol has some mouthwatering LS in, although its a while before you will need to bend the credit card for LS yet :)

How are things going? Its been a little while since your last post and I was wondering how its all progressing?

welcome to MASA and happy posting:)
