I got home from work today and decided to check the structure of the live rock I have in my tank yo see what design I want to have and then I see something move. It's a small crab! I will try post pics to see if anyone knows what type of crab it is. Do I have to feed it or is the live rock sufficient for it?

Don't think crabs eat rocks. He/she mite eat any other hitchhikers that came with ur rock tho. I would suggest feeding him and keeping its tummy full so it doesn't eat any of the good hitchhiker or any other good for your tank creatures you mite already have in your tank.

Is it a hermit crab (inside a shell) or normal crab...
Would also like to see a pic of it...
Most hermit crabs are good for your tank & unfortunately, most non-hermits are bad except for porcelain, emerald & acropora symbiotic crabs...

I am going to take him out and give him back to the pet shop. Im just worried if there are more or even if there are eggsand they hatch at a later stage. Is there anything I can do?

My philosophy is that everything in the correct proportion has a place in your system. (refferring to bristle worms and copeods and even crabs). but for optimal results and to negate risk of fish losses its best to remove the crab and replace with a "friendlier" version to achieve the same clean up function..

Ok I don't mind at all. I'll take it out and can I keep it in a Tupperware with the water?

When would you like to collect him. I stay in Greenstone?

Just to add my two cents on this topic :whistling:

I once had enough of similar hitchhiker crabs. I had always never bothered with them until I lost a few Lyretails and noticed a little coral damage. I assume when they grew large enough food became scarce and they started hunting :(

It took me half a day but I removed all live rock from my tank and repacked each stone one at a time. Checking each hole and each crevice I eventually found 5 seperate crabs similar to the photo above. All of them a little larger than a R5 coin accorss. Four I managed to haul out of their lairs. One died. Since that day no more unwanted guests. Since that day no more mystery fish deaths and coral damage.

I would never have imagined finding 5 crabs in my tank. I knew of only 3 of them and had seem them at night when they came out.

Once taking them out I noticed a huge burst of green long haired algae. Now I have 6 hermits of various sizes and 1 mexican turbo snail mowing the lawn

Yes you can store him in a tupperware bowl with tank water in it. Enough so that he is covered quite a bit for longer journeys ;)

@Shaun thanks for the advice. I will take the rocks out and check thoroughly as my tank is only two days old. I really don't want to have future problems.
