Hi guys, is this a good or bad hermit crab? He is about the size of a 2 rand coin now. Got him when he was a pinky nail size - provided him with bigger shells while he's growing. He hasn't been any trouble up to now - just grazes on the rocks all day. Will he become a bad boy when he is fully grown?

Thanks for fixing the pics Kanga - don't know what happened there....
As long as he doesn't chow my corals and re-aquascape my tank when he grows up, I'm happy!

What Kanga said..... I too have some in my tank! No problems from them. I think that the general rule with hermit crabs, is, that, when their pinchers are tiny, and the same size, then hermit crabs should not be able to do much damage!

    Non-Hermit Safe

IMO these hermits are reef safe in not bothering your corals, but they are not hermit safe. Put in any other species and they will rip him apart for the shell. Even if the shell is smaller. I have three of these units and they took out all my red-legged dwarfs.

tobes - do not provide him with bigger shells - the more shells you provide and the bigger you provide, the faster he will grow. i gave mine bigger shells and he grew like hell - i stopped giving him shells and for the last 2 months he is fine.

mine only harm my other hermits - i agree with Warren -

Now that is just plain cruel man, how would you feel if you were put in a container while you're young and growing and cannot get out because you're afraid someone might harm you? Shame man....:(

I have one too Tobes. He's very peaceful, except he sometimes bullies smaller crabs out of their food, but that would happen with any crab I suppose.

Tobes, I agree with you but these units can get really big, I have seen one living in a cowrie shell and he was the size of my hand.

Normally in our tanks we only supply snail shells, so that is their limit in growth, but if you what huge hermits go for it :thumbup1:
