Good or bad Algae

can some one help? my friends tank has alot of this thick dark red/Maroon algae on the back wall of the tank.

is this bad?

Not good, check his water parameters and see that the circulation is adequate.

Is it a slime algae or a hard calcareous algae?

it is quite slimey

Slime algae is a bad one and i agree water parameters should be checked esp phosphates. What skimmer is he using and how much water flow in the system?

Me think you need more water movement in the tank.

Siphon that off the back glass, before it gets on the rock and substrate.

Hi there - I would also agree with Thalion - more DIRECT water movement on the back end of the glass... Since I moved my power-heads to blow directly towards each other (was blowing against the back glass) I too have some cyano bacteria.... Yeah - I know - I think that my phosphates are still a little hi-ish.... I am feeding MUCH less to try and curb this, as well as my phosphate reactor is now in full swing as well....
