Hi to all MASA members. First, a big thank you for an awesome site!! I'm very excited to have join this gr8 community. I've already uploaded tons of information to the brain  from different threads to help me to start this crazeeeee addicted hobby!! :yeahdude:

It all began when i was down in umhlanga rocks a few weeks back. I saw this amazing marine aquarium down by the gateway mall. It wasn't the fist time though, i have seen many before but this time it made me want to have my own. So thats when it all started. I did some research and then came across this brilliant site that made me feel addicted just by looking at what some of you guys already achieved. WELL DONE TO ALL AND KEEP IT UP!!!

I had the following in mind, and please if anyone can give me any advice please let me know.

I already decided on the tank size, and as a matter of fact i'm waiting for delivery.:)
All custom build. I will post pics as soon as my project starts!!
This is what i have in mind.

FOWLR and then maybe some corals.
Tank : 1200mmX500mmX600mm (10MM Glass) with custom overflow
Sump : 800mmX400mmX400mm with DSB and Calupra.

Looking at 4 compartments.. 1st Skimmer, 2nd Bio Balls, 3rd DSB + Calupra and 4th Return. Is there anything in between i can add like wool, charcoal ect that can make it even better? Was also thinking of a 5th Auto topup.

    Skimmer : Orca 100-INT
    Heater: Jager 300W
    Lighting : 4x 54W T5's (2x Actinics, 2x 12000K)
    Pump: 3000-3500l/h return pump
    Powerheads: ??? Please advice.....
    Gravel:Live Sand

I'm still considering if i want to go LR or maybe artificial rock, if that is what you call it.

Thanks again and enjoy the journey!!

A VERY WARM WELCOME to MASA Goby! Great to have you on-board!

Awesome that you have joined MASA!

In a sump of 800mm, I would not divide it into 4 chambers.... and the bio-balls would be a waste of your time/effort and money.

I would MUCH rather maximize the DSB space that you have in the sump.
The Deep Sand Bed, should be around 150mm deep - using very fine sand (sugar fine)......

Please post pics as soon as you have some!

Also - it's a great skimmer you going for! Awesome man! Good luck, and ENJOY the journey! It is indeed an AWESOME and addictive journey!

Thanks for the warm welcome!! what size sump would you recommend and why would bio balls be a waste?

    Hi Goby and welcometomasa!!!!

Congrats on making the decision to take up a fantastic and rewarding hobbie.

Sounds like you have done some homework... just somethoughts....:whistling:

Like Jacquesb said rather go for a bigger dsb and dont use bio balls at all! Live rock is very important for the filtration and adding some goodies into your system that will sustain it. Allot of reefers use "base rock" and then add some premium grade live rock on top (from fiji and kenya to name a few) also go with fine sand or aragonite for your sand bed in your DT. Stay away from the course coral as a substrate:nono:. I just replaced mine with playsand (a nice cheap alternative to arogonite!!!;)).

Remember to take it slow and ask as many questions as possible! I look forward to seeing some great pictures of your system maturing!!

Also check out the sponsors sites and they will only be happy to give you great honest advise at a great price!!:1:

I'm going to use euro style bracing on the DT. still have to order that. how wide should the support glass be for the top and the bottom. I'm going to use 10mm glass for the bracing.

Welcome to MASA Goby, glad you joined! How's the progress going so far?

Just for some info, read the link in my signature if you haven't read it yet somewhere else. If you haven't setup the sump yet, only make 3 chambers
    1 - skimmer
2 - DSB with macro algae on top like chaetomorpha (as a beginner I would advise to stay away from caulerpa)
    3 - return pump.

Please fill us in on how things are going
