There are aquariums that look fantastic and stunning, and then there are reef aquariums that are so jaw dropping gorgeous that they have us gasping for air enchanted by its beauty. Gloupe’s Reef is most definitely, one hundred percent in the latter category. The coral growth in this reef is so dense, and the colors so vivid they almost have us wondering if it is possible to have such a beautiful reef aquarium in the first place.* This is the kind of tank that serves as a reference for judging other aquariums. This French Reef aquarium is the definition of a master piece, a*chef-d’oeuvre.

The main display measures 78 x 40 x 30 inches (200 x 100 x 75 centimeters) which amounts to 395 gallons (1500 liters). Along with the sump and frag tank the total system volume amounts to 450 gallons (1700 liters). The display is lit by a combination of three 400 watt 14k Metal Halides, four 30 watt T8, two 80 watt T5 and two 24 watt T5. *Protein skimming is done by a Lio 51 skimmer with a 7500 LAGUNA pump (nearly identical to the Bubble King 300 skimmer, different pump). 1.5 liters of carbon and 1 liter of GFO furthermore keep the water clean. 4kg of coralbones in a aquasyl calcium reactor meet the high calcium demand. Fauna Marin Ultra bak carbon is dosed in order to maintain the low phosphate levels and vivid colors. Flow is provided by three Tunzes 4002, one Tunze 6080 and one Tunze 6060 along with a Eheim 1060 and Laguna 6000 which serve as returns.

The two frag tanks (video above) are beast on their own, both filled from top to bottom with very healthy vivid coral frags. The first frag tank is lit by five 24 watt T5 along with a 250 watt Metal Halide fixture and the second frag tank is illuminated by three 24watt T5 and a 250 watt Metal Halide fixture. 30 gallon water changes are done on the system monthly and this beauty is backed up by a 45Ah battery backup. Be sure to check out Gloupe’s blog for a lot more info and pictures.
