    Thinking about upgrading my 1000 x 1000 x 600 cube to a proper cube. 1000 x 1000 x 1000. Do I go float glass, low iron glass or acrylic?

    Float glass, a cube in acrylic alone will cost about R34000

    Yip, cost is going to be the limiting factor with acrylic...
    1x1x1 cube would mean about 20mm side thickness & 30mm bottom(off the top of my head here so forgive if im wrong) when using glass on a braceless cube.
    If you go to acrylic, you would need 30-35mm acrylic & 40mm bottom which is going to start looking strange with light deflection & there are very few guys in ZA that i would trust to build an acrylic tank of those dimensions!
    I would say acrylic is a definite no go for that size tank.
    It would be much cheaper & look a lot better to go starphire... Plus you can build it yourself!!!

    Building acrylic tanks is not that difficult. There are a few companies that build acrylic tanks. Unfortunately they have given them a bad name by inflating the pricing.

    I have managed to find a source for 3x2m sheet of 25 mm Acrylic at a reasonable price. I will get all the panels out of one sheet including the bracing. I will also use SS wire for bracing so that the lighting is not impaired.

    Are you going to glue it together, or do the bonding technique?

    Ah,,, lol. That's the word I was looking for... Are there even companies in SA that can "bond" it so that it is completely seamless? I figure, if your going acrylic with it being so expensive and all, you might,just as we'll go all the way,,,,

    Yes this tank we did some years back is acrylic. It has stood the test of time regarding scratching. We have over the years figured out how to keep it in top condition.

    I bow to you sir janitor, if you build it out of glass, you'd always be wondering.......'what if I did it with acrylic?'....'what if......what if....'

    On a less serious note;
    Unfortunately the fish tank building ape died, he ate a glass banana
