    Hi All

I am currently in the early planning stages of constructing a gigantic marine aquarium (for snorkelling etc.- similar to uShaka / 2 Oceans). It is by no means a small undertaking nor are there any "exotic" (easy-to-die) species required ! Having given all that information I am eager to arrange for meetings with any interested persons that may contribute towards this project. My email is jaq-teq@webmail.co.za.

    Kind Regards

The planned size is approximate 5000sq.m (1.5m depth) of open air snorkelling in Gauteng. I am currently testing the waters (excuse the pun!) to find persons interested in either supplying stock / constructing the aquarium / maintaining the system / providing expertise for this project.

Companies and or individuals are welcome to express their interest in participation. Please forward any portfolio or website details to the following email address :

Sjoe .... thats quite an a big surface area ... How do plan to compensate for evaporation .... And Temperature control ..... And Being so far from natural sea water top ups and water changes are going to be a serious challenge ... Don't get me wrong .... not saying its impossible or being a wet blanket just pointing out the some things things to consider .... Would this be like a theme park where one can pay and snorkel to cover up costs or is this a personal "pool" to enjoy this hobby ...

    Hi Jeffo,
I used to own and run the dive centre that did the diving at uShaka.
My 2c worth is if you could make it slightly deeper about 2M at least and make all snorkellers wear float jackets, then the substrate wont get churned up and clogg the filters and hamper the viz!

All respect to those members that I know already here on the forum ... Obviously Jeffo is not one of our run of the mill hobbyist that wants a little piece of the ocean sitting in his lounge ... Just asking him if he considered all these factors and what is then end result hoping to achieve ... A public snorkel lagoon or a private beach in his backyard ... Asking these questions helps us help him and in the end realize his dream ....

What happened to I think it was Share World ... Think was near Benoni / Boksburg ... Was years ago that I visited there ... remember paid 5 bucks to enter and spend the whole day down there water slides and had an artificial beach with waves and all and all .....

I agree, was at Ushaka earlier this year and the lagoon has nice depth. If you were to make it shallow you would then have a dedicated path to snorkel which wouldn't be all that great. Would be nicer to be able to view from top down and not just look at it from a distance. Maybe 2,5m to 3m then one wouldn't hamper or really disturb the wildlife?
