Last week’s Rio+20 event for the*United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development*an enormous beach installation was created uses discarded plastic bottles to remind people to reduce the amount of plastic bottles they use and to properly dispose of them when done. There are millions of tons of plastic in our oceans, most of which doesn’t biodegrade but breaks down into smaller pieces that either entangle or are consumed by smaller creatures — fish, turtles and birds — causing death or other serious injury. The fish*sculptures was built on*Botafogo beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and were illuminated at night. There are more inspiring images after the break and at this*Rio+20 Flickr set.
