After 8 months out of marines, I want to get going again. This time bigger, I hope. Need some advice. Planning a full reef tank. Would have to be see through with sides blacked out . I have an area between two rooms. The size is 2,2m x 0,8 and the height i have is about 1m (this would be the size of the tank) no need for a stand as it will rest on a concrete slab.
    Questions are:
    1. Is it possible to have a tank 1m deep ( light is a concern)?
    2. New or second hand?
    3. How big would the sump have to be ?
    4. Can the Skimmer be on the same height as the Tank ?

Thanks in advance for any help.

With 2.2 you have lots of volume and swimming distance. Unless you're an especially well endowed orangutang 1m deep is going to be a constant frustration.

Is your sump on the same level?

My tank is also 800 deep and I have to remember to wash the deodorant off before reaching to the bottom. Before I built my koi pond, my wife made me measure the distance to the bottom of my daughter's chin so she would not drown and could still stand if she fell in. I suggest you measure your arms and make that the max. 800mm is a nice visual depth and you still have a good variation of lighting requirements on the structure.

Except for being able to reach the bottom, it depends on your rockwork. High rockstack with corals up high and light would not be an issue for the top corals. Just to get the right rock pieces that can be stacked properly or somehow secured. Maybe plastic rods. Remember that LED units need to be a minimum distance from the water with adequate airflow for cooling. Radion units are 24 - 27 cm above the water. So ensure that you got enough space above the tank to be able to hang the lights plus being able to get your torso in there when needed.

Doubt you will get a specific second hand tank. Especially one at 1m deep.

depends on what you want to use as filtration.

Yes, why not. As long as the skimmer does not sit too deep, have its outlet above water and you still have enough space to remove the skimmer cup.

Thanks guys for all the input it certainly has helped. Although I still went with a 900 mm deep tank. Has it challenges . Will start a new thread for the tank we installed this weekend .

    Looks good

How much access space do you have at the top?

I have about 30cm above the tank. Very limited, so will be a challenge.
    Thanks Riaan

IMO too much of your rock footprint is on the floor, try stack it up on top of smaller pcs so you don't get dead zones

Going to be a man fish cave!!!!
