    Hello Folks,

I purchased a filefish last year sometime and, sadly, he hasn't touched my aiptasia forrest. Before I decide to turf him (not kill), I've placed him in the sump and am feeding him less/skipping days in the hope he'll get hungry and start eating the aiptasia on the rock I've placed in the sump with him.

Has anybody had any success converting a filefish in such a manner or am I wasting my time?

    Thanks!
    P

What type of filefish is it? Is it the type that eats aiptasia?

    Taarhirs,

It's a Matted filefish, so I believe it is?

Mine took about 4 months before I noticed he is actually working. Also eating mojano after aptaisia declined.

Mine took about 4 months as well. But once it discovered it could eat aiptasia, the pests were gone in a few weeks

I got a filefish that is an aiptasia destroyer. Cleaned out my tank totally.

Friend of mine also got one, bit smaller that does not eat aiptasia. Ended up borrowing him mine. Within a day, his smaller one learned from my bigger one that it can eat aiptasia. From there he also became an aiptasia destroyer.

Think they learn faster by example

    I can.
But they are on their way to a friends tank for a tour of duty. Cleaning his tank. 3 or 4 weeks they should come back.

My Filefish destroyed my Xenia forest and didn't touch any Aptasia. I think your on the right track with yours, @Elrond it's totally worth the effort and time.

Anyone know how I could catch mine, he wiped out my aptasia, but think it's now having a go at my corals, so think it is better to sell him off

I guess it's the same thing as any other fish - trap it or pack out your corals and rocks!

Thought someone might have a truck up their sleeve , especially since they are pretty quick when they want to be

divide the tank with piece of eggcrate or glass at two thirds.

Then you only need to unpack one third of the tank. Just make sure that he cannot escape foiling your plans

I recently added a Majestic Angel and although I haven't actually seen him eat Aptasia, there's a definite decline in aptasia population since adding him. Definitely prettier than a file fish..
