    Hi there,
The bug has bitten and my husband and myself are keen on doing a marine tank. We had a fresh water aquarium for a couple of years way back in 2009 with superb fish - arowana and hi fin pengasius in it. We let it all go when we moved houses. Now we are excited to start a long-term project of setting up our marine tank. It is a big learning curve and I've been reading and watching Youtube videos on this. We're scanning for bargain sales and just getting our minds around the aspects of what is needed. Like to learn from others to try and avoid mistakes and streamlining the tanks working.
Although my interest were peaked on a nano tank, we're looking to start of with a much bigger tank. Will start from scratch and try and build most parts (tank & stand & sump). Looking to see if there's any worth while books on such a large project.? Is it best to start all over / new (financially does it really work out DIY)?

Nice to know there's such a big interest on this and happy to join this community!

in my opinion if you are skilled enough and have a good idea of what you want you can save quite a bit of money by building the tank, the sump and the stand yourself. as for the rest of the equipment I would say buy brand new with the money you saved by building the thank etc. yourself. one thing is certain thou.. here you gonna get the best advise from all the experienced members ... and plenty of it too. all you have to do is keep on feeding them pics of how the project is coming along :)

as hot sauce mentioned, save and buy the best skimmer and lights, everything else is not as important

what size tank are you looking for? @Andre@ReefAquatics has some good deals and probably the closest sponsor

    Thanks for warm welcome

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. Busy checking out some of your aquarium specs.
Lots of members from the George area, nice - it is probably the town with the most pet shops I've ever seen.
    We're more towards Plett.
dallasg, appreciate info on the books. The Coral Reef Aquarium: From Inception to Completion (Oceonographic Series) are the most recent, will most probably go for this one.
Added Reef Aquatics to my supplier list - will contact them.
I am just wondering how it is possible to get such nice looking aquariums like the "Red Sea" collection and if it is possible to get it done via DIY and still make it look stunning.
We're aiming for +/- 1000L - 1400L tank but I am a bit worried that it is going to be costly as a start-out tank - husband wants to go bigger.

    Tanks for sale

    Hi Andre,
That's good news - thanks. We would like to know if you have any specials on 500L + tanks? Not sure if it is best to "private message" you or if this posting is ok, still getting used to the workings of this forum.
