I collected sand for my tank.Im changing from crushed coral, shell to sand I collected. I dont want the live in the sand so I cleaned it. I ran out of time so left the bucket with a little sand and water in it for 2 days. now its got a funny smell. If I collected new sand and put it in my tank. will it also go bad or is it just coz I left the sand in the bucket.? I cant find play sand anywhere in this town (closest other town where i might find it is an hour away)so my only option is to use sand that I collected at low tide. Im going to be changing a 3rd per week of the crushed coral for the sand. I know that the crushed coral is the root of all the evil in my tank.

What did you use to clean the sand?
The funny smell most likely casued by the live things (worms, pods etc) dying. You shouldnt get the smell if you put the sand directly in your tank.

it traps detritus and will thus lead to increased nutrients in your tank which can fuel the growth of nuisance algae.

The reason why I dont want the live in the sand is because the water temp here in Hermanus is about 10 - 12 degrees celcius. It is much colder than the water in my tank so everything living in the sand would probably die when I put it into my tank. Whats your opinion?

    not everything will die.
You not replacing your entire sand bad at once, so any die off you have from the live sand will be minimal and your fitration should be able t ocope.

You mean besides the rotting life thats causing the smell? Which would lead to an ammonia spike, besides that nothing much

It will take weeks/months to clean that sand. The dead rotten stuff should be thrown away.
Im talking about when he gets new sand

I am also talking about the beach sand that he half-cleaned. You cannot put that in the DT and expect nothing to go wrong

So you think he should carry on cleaning the half cleaned stuff and then add it to the tank?

Im saying when he gets new sand, he should put it straight into the tank.
