    Hi all

    A quick introduction.
My name is DuRaan and I live in Jhb. As an ex diving instructor and underwater photographer I always had a love of all things underwater both sea and fresh water.

Having had freshwater tanks for many years my wife unbelieveably bought me a 28g Nano tank for my birthday last year Feb. Reading the threads in the newcomer section this was the first mistake the LFS made.

Relying heavily on the instructions of the LFS I got the tanks cycled and as I presume all newcomers do I put too much in too quickly. The net result was quite a few dead clownfish:(. Some due to water quality but others due to fighting. Mostly though due to my lack of understanding. Other things that died due to the same reasons. A giant clam:(. A long tentacle anemone.:(:( and a few other corals all sold happily by LFS without knowing what my setup is. At last my Nano and I now understand each other. I have only LR and a few fish. I know when to change the water and how to take care of what's inside . I have not had a death in the last 6 months. In one very close call I had to remove all the fish and rush them to the LFS to keep for 2 weeks while the tank sorted itself out. After that the most beautiful red algae started growing in the tank. Enough of that.

My exitement is due to a large tank I bought from MikeR on this site and will be installing over the next weeks

The tank is 1600x 600 x600 with sump and skimmer. I since added a phosphate reactor, kalkwasser stirrer, calcium reactor, and Aquatronica controller as well as a mixing station with 100l freshwater suplied by RO unit, 100l mixing drum with pump.

The freshwater auto top up a 25 l holding tank in the cabinet and the salt manually tops up a 50l holding tank in the cabinet .

The freshwater will top up to the sump and the salt will be used for water changes.

Other things I intend to get in the near future is an ozonizer and a water chiller.

My intention is to create the best possible conditions for my livestock. I never want to go through the trauma of seeing stuff die knowing it most likely came from the ocean to be killed in my tank.

I will post pics soon of how the new tank is coming as well a keeping a diary of whats happening with the set-up

it sounds like the road has been long and a little tough, but share your experiences and goals and lets see if we can smooth over some of the bumps:)

the intro of being an underwater photographer means that you HAVE to share a few pics with us :)
