If I wanted to start a frag only tank what filtration would I need? Does the tank have to cycle as no rock will be added?

    Thanks

Depends on what you want to frag. I dont really have any filtration on y frag tank, just like rock, argonite and the odd water change. But its for softies only.

I think a cycle of some sort is a must especially in a small tank where things can get ugly quickly.

Best is to plumb it into the existing tank. Then you inherit everything from it. Any reason why you would not want to plumb it in?

Plumb the frag tank in with the main system. Added water volume, and no need to have special filters, feeding, water changes and all that schlep. Let it overflow back to the main sump.

Yep all my frags have been grown like that. I have no fish in that tank so it doesnt have much bio load, and by pruning macro algaes every now and again I export nutrients....

Unfortunately can't plumb to main tank as I don't have the space. Would have to be a separate unit

i would say it depends on what you are fragging , i dont like cutting up softies in my DT or even in my frag tank which is plumbed in , if not plumbed in i would add a deep sand bed , and add a refugium , takes care of filtration and provides plenty of food , well thats how Calfo does it and works for me

my frag tank runs right around my sump , you can see the skimmer through the glass , both my tanks and my refugium dump into this "channel" so all left over food from both tanks come through here first , i keep a a couple of local tangs in there to take care of algae and any left over food that comes from the other tanks

if you look at the pic in my signature you can see my refugium is slightly higher than my display , a double inverted elbow skims and gravity feeds water to the main DT with loads of copepods and other goodies for my fish and coral to eat
