    Hi all

    As a nuub I have a question.
What is the etiquette with regards to asking for coral frags..

For instance, if I visit someone who has some nice corals, may I ask for a frag, do I wait for him/her to offer :)P) do I offer to buy a frag or do I offer a swap if I have any (at this stage I have none to offer :p)

What is your feelings with regards to this?

    Tnx.

    Niel.

I actually prefer giving my frags away rather than selling. Reason being, If I loose a colony, I still know, that someone has another colony as backup.
So bottom line, ask and thou shall receive :)

    Matt 7v7 - ;)

I dont really think their is any etiquette. If he has something nice, tell him when he frags, could he keep you a colony. A lot of times he hasn't had a home for the frag, so he kept the coral in tact. Now he has a reason and home, and may do it.

Giving frags away all depends on what it is I think. A common loose mushroom for example might not be worth selling, unless it's like a Ricordea Yuma or Florida or something. But a lot of guys have huge colonies of SPS for example, and to give you a small litlle branch would not affect them at all. If you do get a nice big colony, I feel the person can sell to you if he wants, or can justify it.

Just my 2c, but I agree, ask and he will only say yes, or no. Dont be shy. ;)

I prefer to give smaller, unmounted frags away, will sell the larger frags and specially if I mount them.

when u by the individual place, just say that you really like that coral, and when he does frag he must let you know-either swop for stuff or pay him for it.

Or if he refuses, get some jik and threaten to throw it in his tank:lol:

    and run for your life.............................

Tell you what - as soon as your tank is ready and cycled - I'll give you a frag,
I have 4 euphilia frags that Hennie gave me some time ago.

I can spare a frag or two...;)

Just let me know when ready!

    Nice question Nsteyn.

It won't effect them, but I can tell you that when you have an established tank that needs trimming once in awhile, you need to put a value to the frags or people don't look after and do the research on the corals as they should. To be honest, when I set up my tank I wasn't given any freebees. And if something died, I made sure that I found out why to prevent it happening again. Anyone that has a sps dominated tank knows how much labour, chemicals and electricity cost to get to a point where the corals are of a fraggable size. So, no I don't give corals away as a rule. When I sell, I always give away extras and I make sure that the prices are around half of what the LFS would sell at.

Go ahead and ask, but don't ask presuming that you'll get it for free.

PS. I've got some frags in my substrate that need to go. These are free first come first served.
