To all the lighting fundi's out there

I have a Juwel Lido 120 tank currently running as a bath water tank but i have FINALLY convinced the wife to convert to a FOWLR marine tank.

It is currently running 1 x Juwel 24W Colour T5 tube and 1 x Juwel 24W Day T5 tube. These tubes are about a year old. Juwel also have a 24W Marine and a 24W Blue available.

Marine: 15000 Kelvin, clear white light, promotes coral growth
Blue: Promotes coral growth, simulates light condition to depths of around 6m
Day: 9000 Kelvin, promotes plant growth
Nature: 4100 Kelvin, warm / natural light, promotes photosynthesis

I am planning to DIY a strip (or 2) of blue LED's. Should I replace the current Day and Nature with the Marine and Blue? Or use some other combination?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Carter - you can use ANY lighting for a FOWLR tank. The actinics lighting brings out the coloration of fish. The white is just there to offset the worst blue hue.

With a FOWLR, you do not have to adhere to specific wattage per tank size, ie. with a coral tank.

It would depend on the color combination that you would like to see.

Off the topic of lighting, what sort of flow do you recommend for FOWLR?

The filter is situated in the back left corner and the pump in the filter is rated for 600LPH. I also have a spare Sicce Voyager V2 3000LPH waver. Would this be sufficient? I can angle the filter pump in 1 of 3 directions: straight out across the back of the tank (flowing from right to left), at an angle upwards towards to the centre of the tank creating turbulence on the surface, or downwards at an angle towards the front left corner.

I think I can get an impellor for the pump to increase flow rate to 1000LPH.

    Any tips?

someone once said theres no such thing as too much flow.

what you want to acheive is random flow that creates few/no dead spots in the tank ( so that detritus cant settle). The pumps you have may be sufficient but will depend alot on your scaping. Best is to get the tank running, use the pumps you have then add more if the desired flow is not obtained.

Depends on livestock. If you want to go with a macroalgae-heavy setup, then go for more light and flow.

i agree with 459b, add random flow and also aim some of the flow to agitate the surface, better for oxygen and gas exchange
