I have a diamond sized tank that is 437l of water. I have every thing in that a good tank need. Dsb, skimmer, phosphate remover etc. Lanzo of Dory pets build the tank for me in Sep 09. I have plus minus 40kg live rock. My fishes disappear. Yes without me seeing the skelotons of remains or whatever. I have lost about 20 fishes over the past 3 months. My box fish was swimming very happy the night before I went to bed. The next morning gone!!! I have heard that a pistol shrimp is the culprit. Is this true or just a story to make me feel better. Please help. I don't know what to do anymore.

    Jakkie:(

wow jackie thats quite a loss:(

why not list what inhabitants you have (as in you know you have including any thing like star fish etc) and which fish are disspearing, the size of the fish may give us an indication.

what sort of clean up crew do you have as they might be getting to any dead fish before you see them (although skeletons normally come out) and is your rock work tightly packed so that maybe you cant see into it?

have you taken a torch at night and looked for strange lurking crabs or shrimps? you might have to use a red filter and go very slowly as many noctural predators (if thats what it is) will retract from light.

give us a little more info and lets see if we cant pin point it down for you:)

Hi Jakkie, it could be a Pistol Shrimp or a Mantis Shrimp. Do you hear any clicking noises coming from the tank, particularly at night?

Do you have any corals in the tank and are they doing well?

    Do you test your water?

How do you acclimatise your fish?

The pistol shrimp or mantis shrimp would need to be big to kill of that many fish. I'm sure you would have seen it. How big are the fish that died? Also is it possible if you can post all your parameters. Do you have corals in the tank, if so are they all alive.

I've got a small pistol shrimp in my tank and it doesn't go near any of my fish.

That is like 2 fish a week. That is bad.

Depends on your clean-up crew. What do you have. I had lost smaller fish before, and the Hermits take care of them. Did not even found anything. Not even any spikes in the water chemistry.

But it surely do sound like you got something in there that should not be there. Some predator.

Take a flash light, small one. Eat a chocolate, those with the red see through plastic wrappers. And put the plastic over the flash light lens. Make sure room is completely dark, and go check tonight after 23:00 what you can see.

Post your pictures through photobucket or image uploader. You will need to resize your pics - use microsoft office picture manager.
