    Hi there.

So I did my first test today of the water, and just want to get some advice on how my levels are.

    PH Level - 8.2
    KH Alkalinity - 6dKH
    Nitrat - <1mg/l
    Nitrit - 0.02mg/l
    Ammonium - 0.5 mg/l

According to the test everything is fine, im just worried about the ammonium level. The guy said i can put 2 clown fish in so long, so they are in will post some pic, and i also have a piece of coral in that i will post a pic of. Im not sure what kind of coral it is but the guy said it will be fine in a new tank before i get all the fancy corals.

The tank is new, only 3 weeks old so will keep everyone updated.

    Thank you

    Hey

Your tank is still to new for any live stock espesially corals... The reading may be fine but in the cycle the readings go up and down several times. It may now read 1 and in 2 weeks time it will be 5 or something. I would say wait at the minimum untill the tank is 6 months old. You can also try to 'read' the tank. If you see all the nuisence algae dissapear and stay away for a few weeks, then you know the nutrients are gone for them to feed on. Please don't listen to Pet shops as most of them don't care about the live stock and rather care about how quick they can make a buck. Post a pic of the coral please because if it's a mushroom or zoa's then it would be fine but some corals will never make it in a new tank... O ya cuddos for you of asking before you buy. Allot of people don't have the guts to ask something like this.

    Hi & welcome

there is so much information on the site & people that have run tanks for years. the advices on the site is normally very sound.

Your KH is to low - it needs to be in this range 7 - 12

you need to test your calcium & Magnesium they might also be on the low side

check ammonia every day make sure it stays 0 if it goes up you can use stability or SAFE / Prime to reduce the ammonia do not over dose these products read before dosing

I'm sorry but those reading are NOT fine. Any ammonia in the tank is BAD, any nitrite in the tank is BAD. The tank is still cycling dude. You cant add any stock. Take the fish and coral back to the moron at the LFS and let them keep it until the cycle is done or get a credit note (Take the credit note and slap the guy with it before leaving).
