Of all the rare reef fish in the world, the masked angelfish is one of the very few for which we follow and track every single specimen collected. The first big splash in rare fish collecting news is Ron Tubbs’ super freshly harvested*Genicanthus personatus, pictured above, and caught just a couple days ago in Hawaii.

We politely pressed Ron for more details on his catch but with such a valuable fish and more to be found, it is understandable that he has remained scant on specifics. Other than being collected over the weekend at significant depths in Hawaii, from the sounds of it Ron’s been working this particular collection site for a while and just recently succeeded in getting one of the holy grails.

Even if RT is not spilling a first hand account on how this fish was captured the way that Matt Ross did, it is totally warranted if he’s got a honey pot collecting spot. We wish Ron Tubbs the best of luck in subsequent collections of the illustrious*Genicanthus personatus,*keep it safe and please send some of these treasures stateside.

If it's rare it should stay in the ocean imo.

Genicanthus personatus (Masked Angel, Masked Angelfish, Masked Angel Fish)

    Justification:
Listed as Least Concern, as collecting of this species for the aquarium trade has not impacted local or global populations of this species, it has a wide distribution (two thirds of which is within marine protected areas), it has a large overall population and no apparent major threats.

If you want to know if a fish is endangered look at the The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species web page

without it being collected we would never know it existed.. i am for controlled collection of certain species... some species are simply too deep to get out safely...
