I have got years of exprience with freshwater but finaly decided to
take my chances and attemp starting a marine tank. Always wanted
to, but never really had the funding or bravery to tak it on.

    Anyway. I have got a 600L (1.7m x 600mm x 600mm) tank.
Filter - don't know make off hand but it is a ( C-1600 canister filter)
I know I'm going to need a skimmer but can you recomend which one
to look at buying? Also can I connect the skimmer inline with the canister
to avoid extra pipes running into the tank. There are also no holes drilled
into the bottom of the the tank, would you recomend I get one drilled.
Should I also fit a sump or is the canister sufficent?

Will be needing lighting still so what would you advise me to look for as
a starter with regard to the size of the tank.

Looking forward to your feed back and still have many more unanswered
    questions.

Welcome to MASA Daniel, glad you joine us. For starters please read the link in my signature for great info on how to start your first marine tank. I prefer having a tank drilled as most of the equipment can be hidden away in the sump.

    Welcome to MASA Daniel!

Canister filters are not the best option when keeping Marine tanks. Live rock, live sand, a decent clean up crew (CUC) and a good skimmer is a better option.

Are you looking for a hang on back skimmer (HOB) or are you going to have it in a sump. A sump is a better option.

There are many options available when it comes to lighting. Do you know what you plan to keep, fish only, soft coral, large polyp stony corals (LPS), and/or small polyp stony corals (SPS)?

Welcome to the dark side daniel you rtank set up will depend on what you will keep eventually. In my opinion a cannister filter can be used ( I have seen many setups running them) but not worth the effort (REGULAR cleaning required) and definiotely not effective enough.

Have the tank drilled (makes for a neater set up), get a sump (standard 3 / chamber will do) and go the skimmer, Deep sand bed, macro algea etc route.

As for skimmers ideally one would like to go for one rated higher than the tanks volume (once again dependent on what you want to keep (example SPS corals require much more prestine water conditions than softies). The reefoctopus series of skimmers are good value for money and does the job

Good luck and feel free to ask as many questions as you want
