    Hi. Welcome to MASA.

A budget of R1000 is going to be really tough. A light unit for nano tanks costs more than that.

If you don't want to keep corals it can be done. You can get a small 45cm tank for your desk and keep a starfish and maybe another small fish with it. You will have to get a hang on back filter though. This should keep you under R1000 especially if you get second hand stuff.

Maybe browse gumtree or this forums for sale section for a good deal. Which city are you in?

I'm getting a 60 or 40-litre tank. Where can you get an starfish and what do they need.

There are loads of types. Best to do some research on what you want. Can get from a pet shop or from the sea depending on what type.

    big bristle star.

Not any of the other species. You would not be able to maintain them.

What Riaan said! If you want to keep just a star get a Green Brittle (Green Death) star, They have a VERY high response when feeding and literally come crawling when they sense food! Dont keep it with fish though, I learnt my lesson :(

You can have a big Brittle star with fish, just not the green brittle star. You can also look at serpent stars, I dont think they prey on fish at all.

Stars are scavengers, I just target feed mine a few pieces of thawed prawn. I have a pink and a green one, the green has been temporarily re-homed thanks @RiaanP! Try to buy prawns as fresh as you can, supermarkets have preservatives added and could be detrimental if fed. You can feed lance fish as well, just cut it into smaller pieces, mine prefers prawnmeat though.

    Where do you live?

I have some brittlestars and never see them. They always hiding in between the rocks. Only see a leg or two sticking out when i feed the tank. If i look late at night with a torch or something i might be lucky seeing them scavenging for food.

Why do you want a starfish?
Most species are not really suitable for an aquarium and require excellent water conditions. Those that are easy to keep generally spend the day hiding so you'll hardly ever see it

The Green Brittle star always came out when it was feeding time, he would "walk" all the way to the food. Really active for a brittle star but again, not to be kept with fish.

My Green star's legs extends about 8 to 10cm past my hand when held.

    Bud, its not as simple.

I started off wanting the Nemo tank. It took me a years worth of planning and research before I started my tank.

The nemo tank will cost you a fair share of money, and you cannot keep ALL the species together, leave alone just keeping the Morish idol.

Just a starfish, you wasting your time in my opinion, you would hardly see it anyway. Besides the ones that you can keep are ugly, maybe its better they hide.

I don't wish to deter you from this hobby, but just do a bit more research and know what you getting into, you may just end up wasting money and frustrating yourself without adequate preparation.

So lets start with the basics:

What do you have so far ?

    1. Tank

Once we know, then we can decide what you need, and perhaps guide you towards where you can get stuf from. If you take your time, you can get this done and really enjoy it.
