Hi komodo. I believe that some people have actually use this. The most common substrate is "Playsand". I went to the local builder's warehouse the past weekend, and they told me "playsand" is what the builders call: Phillipi sand. The exact same. It's like sea sand, but fine and white.... I will use this the next time I redo my tank...

Hi Komodo, no problem with the silica pool filter sand i have a DSb that has been running for 5yrs in the sump. The play sand tends to be whiter in colour, otherwise i think they are both silica sand.
