    Hi All,

    Was just wondering ...

I am guessing that the filter sock is not a "high-tech" piece of equipment for the fish tank ... but what material are the commercially available ones made from ? Does it matter what material the sock is made from?

    Looking at making my own

Any fabric shop has the material used to make them, ask for compressed batting.

I googled compressed batting and im getting pics of filter wool, is this the same fabric/product u refering to or is it the actual material that the sock is made from.

It's similar but not the same, batting is filler for duvets, clothing, etc. compressed batting is as the name suggests, the flattened version.

It's the exact same material used to make off the shelve filter socks, comes in different densities.

I bought some filter socks from LFS but it seems as if they are too long. The height of the filter compartment is 270mm but the socks are 390mm. Is that a problem or is it better to cut the socks ? Only thing is they are Bubble-magus socks and are nicely finished off so I am not too sure how wise it is to cut these ...

Compressed batting and battinr are the same! Compressed batting however is hot rolled to give that flat look like u see with the filter socks. U need to use the thinnest one normally around 100grams. Out of half a meter you will get around 8 depending also on the size you making them.
@Trasique pm me about batting and where you getting it from
