Hey all, this goes out to the guys on the coast... obviously with table salt we add rice to absorb the moisture and to stop it from clumping..

How do I prevent it from happening with Reef salt? In a bag straight into the salt or do I just have to keep hacking at it like ice every time I want to use it?

I know it's something small but it turns my bi-weekly water changes into an almost all night affair :-(

    Help!

Maybe add kitty litter (silica gel) in a plastic bowl and place it on top of your salt in its bucket and then cover it with the lid. Make sure nothing gets in your salt as I'm not sure it's poisonous. We use it in kitchens to keep biscuits and pastries dry

So I'd probably find the gel somewhere like Builders? Could you give me a name brand by any chance?

    Thanks Tony.

You can get it from pet shops that sell cat and dog stuff. They are white crystals with some blue ones. Silica is found in those little sachets that come with foods, shoes or anything they want to keep moisture away from. It's used in cat litter to absorb cat urine and it's horrible smell. Rice will work as well

I just close my bag up and keep it in a resealable bucket.
Never had it clumping or going solid.
20Kgs only lasts me two months.
How long does yours take to get used up?

Cheers, thanks Tony - I've put in a stocking full of rice... next time I'm at the LFS i'll grab a couple of silica sachets.

I've got a Boyu TL550 so it's not that big of a tank so the salt takes me quite a while to finish - also a couple of months.

    Which salt do you use?
