Hi guys, my female clownfish managed to jump out the tank. They were a breeding pair and my favourite fish, had them around two years since I started my tank so I'm pretty sad.

How long does it take for the current male to change to a female? Would it be easier for me to add a smaller or larger clownfish as I do want them to breed again even though I don't plan on raising the fry.

    Thanks

I would add a smaller one as the one you have now will become female and the new one will stay male.

Better to add a smaller one.

I lost 3 pairs of clowns due to jumping. Now, all my holding areas are covered with eggcrate. But last pair, new small clowns, jumped through the eggcrate. Busy changing over to netting now.

I got one pair of clowns were the male is the same size that the female. And no, they are not juveniles either. Nice and big. Point is that you could add a bigger clown, just to find that it is also a male, or it could be a female. You cannot be sure unless you show the dominance dance.

Simpler to add a smaller one.

Sorry for the hijack - so how can you tell the difference between male and female?

I have 2, one larger than the other, and the smaller one is hosting in my Sand Nennie, but the larger one doesn't go in. Haven't seen either one doing the dance yet

The only way I know how to tell the sex is if they breed. Then the larger one is the female.

The one pair I got, both the same size, both big.

Size is normally an indication, but on this pair, they are the exception.

I know them by the dominance charge (female) and the wriggle dance (male)
