I'm curious to hear from the MASA members who have their filtration - sump, refugiums, etc - in their garage. In other words, just the filtration sitting in the garage. What have been your experience and would you recommend this.

Had mine in garage before current setup. Cover it for dust etc. Watch the heat in summer. Was able to keep in check with aircon in house. Advantages were added much bigger sump plus refugium due to no space constraints. Also noise in house eliminated. Can do tests, water changes etc there instead of house = less mess. The occasional flood was in the garage....more advantages if you manage the few downsides

section of my garage is a fishroom. Build a room with shutter-ply wood. With a ceiling of more shutter-ply that doubles up as a platform in the roof trusses to store away lots of boxes etc...

I did install insulation, that silver thick aluminum look alike foil type. Nailed gun that to the rafters so that it runs up just under the roof tiles. That prevents dust and keep temperatures stable.

pics from when the room was just done

Ran my prev setup with sump, frag tank etc. in garage. As mentioned by Riaan, it really makes for awesome maintenance.. No bending under tank to reach stuff and I could mess all i want .

    Thank you.

Other big advantage is that you do not need to carry in water in bottles into the house to do water changes. So much easier to just do it in the fishroom.

Cannot agree more the best thing I ever did. Love the fact that the noise is no longer a problem. The only water in my house is when I drip the odd drop when I place the algae feeders in the tank. Other that that I love it.
